Santa Barbara & Beyond Flashcards
*State what caused large increase in wineries in Santa Barbara since 1980s.
Amerine and Winkler identified the region as ideal for viticulture
*Define Humboldt Current.
aka Peru Current: a cold low salinity ocean current that flows from the south to the north westward along the west coast of South America from the southern tip of Chile to northern Peru; the effect of this current on the California Coast is claimed, but remains disputed. [NOT geographically related to Humboldt County]
*Define Transverse Range and state where it is found.
A group of mountain ranges of Southern California that begin at the southern end of the California Coast Ranges and lie between Santa Barbara and San Diego counties. They derive the name due to their East-West orientation, making them transverse to the general North-South orientation of most of California’s coastal mountains.
*Define Coriolis Effect and describe its effect on the California coast.
In the Northern Hemisphere, upwelling [not upswelling] results along west coasts of continents when winds blow from the north causing Ekman transport of surface water away from the shore, a consequence of the Coriolis effect. It impacts the entire coast but most strongly from Monterey to Santa Barbara
*Name 2 East-West running rivers in Santa Barbara County.
Santa Maria River, Santa Ynez River
*Name 3 AVAs within Santa Ynez AVA.
Sta. Rita Hills AVA, Ballard Canyon AVA, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara AVA
*Name the most widely planted grape of Sta. Rita Hills.
Pinot Noir, Chardonnay
*State why Santa Rita Hills was changed to Sta. Rita Hills.
Due to a protest from the large Chilean Winery called Santa Rita Winery
*Define “chert” soils.
Microcrystalline sedimentary rock material composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2)
*Name the primary grapes of Happy Canyon.
Bordeaux reds (also Sauvignon Blanc) and Rhone varietals; this area was developed to find a portion of the AVA where Cabernet Sauvignon would ripen
*State the reason Sta. Rita Hills is cooler than Happy Canyon.
morning and evening fog, cool ocean breezes impact the Western part of the Santa Ynez Valley more than the eastern part
*State specifically where California’s first vines were planted.
in the area of present day South Coast AVA - 1769 Mission San Diego de Alcala (First Mission and First Vines)
*Name the 5 counties in the South Coast AVA.
Los Angeles County, Orange County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County, San Diego County [Los Angeles Slices Orange Real Slowly.]
*State the 2 major threats facing Temecula and Cucamonga.
1) Pierce Disease (in the late 1990s half of vineyards were destroyed by bacteria spread by Glassy-Winged Sharpshooters,) 2) Urban Sprawl (includes housing and strip malls)
*What are the 3 most important counties of the Central Coast AVA in terms of acreage and production?
Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbera
What two major ocean currents impact Santa Barbara County?
Callifornia Current from the north and the Humboldt Current (disputed) from the south. [The California Current is a Pacific Ocean current that moves southward along the western coast of California. Due to the Coriolis effect (and Ekman Transport) cold deep ocean water upwells near the coast. This results in a cooling effect on the Santa Barbara coast which is readily transmitted by wind and fog down the east-west valleys of the Transverse Ranges.]
Where is Nielson Wineyard and why was it significant?
Santa Maria AVA, first commercial winery in the area after prohibition (1964)
*What was the first AVA of Santa Barbara County?
Santa Maria AVA
*Where is the Citrus-Vineyard Zone and what does it require?
It is a 7,500-acre agricultural protected area outside Temecula city limits that requires wineries to occupy at least 10 acres; wineries also must keep 75% of their land devoted to grapevines and have the capacity to produce 3,500 gallons of wine each year. Locally bottled wine must be made from at least 75% Riverside County grapes. (2006) [CVZ-T]
The Temecula Citrus-Vineyard Zone ordinance was modeled after what previous vineyard conservation effort?
The 1968 Agricultural Preserve in Napa County and the Napa County 75% rule.
