Sanctification Flashcards
Luther’s quote on justification
Justification is by faith alone but not by a faith that is alone
Fruit of sanctification is …. (three things)
Fruit of sanctification is necessary, inevitable, immediate
Phil 2:12-13
continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose (NIV)
Sanctification is a cooperative process. It is ________, not ________. We are _______ at some points and _______ at others.
Sanctification is a cooperative process. It is synergistic, not monergistic. We are active at some points and passive at others.
Legalists
The legalist legislates where God has given us freedom
Antinomianism
The antinomian gives freedom where God has given real direction. They insist that grace not only frees us from the curse of God’s law but delivers us from any obligation to obey God’s law
The errors of activism and quietism (activism)
Selfrighteousness is the danger here, and activism teaches a self-reliance that isdeadly
The errors of activism and quietism (quietism)
Quietism says that we should “Let go and let God.” There are times to be passive and depend upon God, no doubt. But the teaching that we can offer nothing to the work of sanctification is deadly
Antinomian theme song
Freed from the law, o blessed condition
I can sin all I want and still have remission
Formula of Concord (1577) (Lutheran statement of faith)
Three uses for the law
(1) to reveal sin
(2) to establish general decency in the society at large
(3) to provide a rule of life for those regenerated through faith in Christ
Calvin’s threefold use of the law
(1) first purpose is to be a mirror. The law illumines human sinfulness
(2) second purpose is the restraint of evil. It can’t change human hearts but it can serve to protect the righteous from the unjust.
(3) third purpose is to reveal what is pleasing to God.
John 14:15
If you love me, keep my commandments
