sampling techniques Flashcards
what is a pooter?
container that collects small insects when the mouthpiece is sucked
what is a sweep net
net on a pole that sweeps through bushes / long grass to catch insects
what is a pitfall trap
container in ground, level with surface, cover balanced on stones to prevent flooding and leave overnight to collect insects
what is tree beating
hitting / shaking tree to collect organisms that fall onto material
what is kick sampling?
kicking the bottom of a stream / river upstream and use a net to pick up disturbed organisms from substrate
what is a point quadrat
frame placed in habitat, pins placed into frame, count what pins touch
what is a frame quadrat
square frame divided by string / wire into equal subdivisions, record abundance of each species
what are 6 examples of abiotic factors that can be measured
- wind speed
- pH
- temperature
- oxygen content in water
- light intensity
- humidity
explain why the use of data loggers and sensors is advantageous
- reduces human error
- detects rapid changes
- high degree of precision
