Sampling techniques Flashcards
Convenience sampling
select members who are most easily accessible or available
ex survey students in same class as you
Simple random sampling
Each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected ex) drawing names from a hat or assigning numbers to the population and using random number generator
Systematic sampling
list members of the population and select a sample according to a random starting point and a fixed INTERVAL
ex sample of 100 students at a school with an enrolled population of 1000 and chose every tenth person from the sample
stratified sampling
dividing the population into smaller groups known as a strata which are formed based on members shared characteristics. Then chose a random sample from each startum and put them together to form your sample
ex) in a high school of 1000 students you chose 25 students from each of the four year groups to form a sample of 100
Quota sampling
similar to stratified sampling, but involves taking a sample size form each stratum which is in proportion to the size of the stratum
in a high school of 1000 students where 60% of the students are female and 40% are male, your sample should also be 60% female and 40% male
