Sampling Methods & Data Types Flashcards
There are way too many of these.
Continuous Data
The value is measured (e.g. how much does this cat weigh?).
Discrete Data
The value is counted (e.g. how many cats are there?).
Qualitative Data
Information describing something (e.g. what colour is this cat’s fur?).
Simple Random Sampling
Each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected.
Stratified Sampling
Subgroups in a population have a set number of samples to be selected, based on the size of the group.
Quota Sampling
An researcher selects a sample that reflects the characteristics of the whole population (bias is very likely).
Systematic Sampling
Every nth item in the target population is selected.
Opportunity Sampling
Whoever happens to be there and agrees to participate.
Cluster Sampling
Samples are taken from only some of the subgroups.
Self-selected Sampling
Individuals in the sample are volunteers.
