Sampling Methods Flashcards
What is a quadrat?
A type of sampling method used to estimate the population of a stationary species in a large area of similar terrain.
What is the formula to find the average amount of organisms in a quadrat?
average = (sum of counts)/(number of quadrats)
What is the formula for the capture-mark-recapture method of sampling populations?
population size = (initial capture x recapture)/(marked in recapture)
What is a transect?
A sampling technique used when the area has considerable changes in biotic and abiotic factors. For example, muscle populations on rock platforms.
Why is it benefitial to monitor changes in populations sizes?
Because it provides information on the health of a species, or on the efficiency of conservation techniques.
