Sampling methods Flashcards
Sampling methods for AQA spec :)
What is a census?
Where every member of the population is sampled
What are the advantages of a census?
It is unbiased
What are the disadvantages of a census?
It can take a long time to sample every member of the population
It can be costly/expensive
It is hard to guarantee every member will respond
What is simple random sampling?
A random number generator is used to select a sample from a numberd list of the population. (Ignoring repeats)
What is systematic sampling
Select a starting point, n, (Using a random number generator) and sample every nth person until you reach your sample size.
What is stratified sampling?
When your population splits into distinct groups (E.g year groups) and you sample a proportion from each group
Distinct group = They do not overlap
What is cluster sampling?
When groups split into clusters (E.g classes in a college) And you can sample each cluster/take a sample from within that cluster
What is oppourtuity/convieince sampling
E.g Sampling those who walk past you
Quota sampling
Where a quota (certain number) is required for each group. So you keep sampling until each sample is met.
What is self-selection/Volunteer sampling
Where people can choose to take part in the survey. E.g responding to a questionaire.
What is an advantage of simple random sampling
Simple random surveys are quicker and easier than a cencus
