Random Sampling
Is where a sample is selected at random
Strengths of random sampling
Unbiased- everyone has the same chance to be involved and it is more representative
Weaknesses of random sampling
More complex, time consuming
Opportunity Sampling
Most used technique, taking a sample from whoever is available at the time.
Strengths of Opportunity Sampling
Easiest method, quick and cheap
Weaknesses of Opportunity Sampling
Can be biased
Self Selected Sampling
Pls become apart of a study because of volunteering when asked or in response to an advert
Strengths of Self Selected Sampling
Easy, can advertise for people with specific characteristics
Weaknesses of Self Selected Sampling
Unrepresentative, volunteer bias
Snowball Sampling
Find one pps and ask them if they know anyone else who would like to take part
Snowball Sampling Strength
Effective at targeting difficult to access pps, can request pps that have specific features
Weaknesses of snowball sampling
Time consuming, ethnocentric
