Sampling Flashcards
1
Q
What is primary data?
A
Information you collected yourself
2
Q
What is secondary data?
A
Information that has been collected by someone else
3
Q
What is qualitative data?
A
Data that is descriptive
4
Q
What is quantitative data?
A
Data that is numerical - it can be continuous or discrete
5
Q
Define Continuous data
A
Data that can take any values and is measured
6
Q
Define Discrete data
A
Data which can be counted and has finite values
7
Q
What is a population?
A
All the members of the considered group
8
Q
What is a census?
A
When a survey is carried out of the whole population
9
Q
Describe Simple Random sampling
A
- Each member of the population has an equal chance to be picked
- Use a Random number generator (RNG)
10
Q
Describe Cluster sampling
A
- Population is divided into groups
- Some of the clusters are selected by a RNG
- All members of the selected cluster are sampled
11
Q
Describe Systematic sampling
A
- The population is in an ordered list
- The size of the population is divided by the sample (sample interval)
- A starting point is randomly chosen and we skip ahead in step sizes equal to the sample interval
12
Q
Describe Stratified sampling
A
- The population is split into groups of the same characteristics (strata)
- The number of members selected from each strata is proportional to its size
- Those members are selected by SRS
13
Q
Describe Quota sampling
A
- The population is split into strata
- A desired number of members from each strata is decided upon
- The interviewer conducts the survey enough times until the desired quotas have been reached
