Sampling Flashcards
What is stratified sampling
Researchers divide subjects into subgroups called strata based on characteristics that they share
This is then divided by the population to create representative data
Give an example of stratified sampling
A class has 20 students
18 male and 2 female
A researcher wanted a sample of 10
The sample would consist of 9 randomly chosen males
And 1 randomly chosen female
To represent this population.
What is random sampling
Sampling without bias, all options have an equal chance
Give an example of random sampling
The first 20 names pulled out of a hat containing 100 names would be chosen
Describe systematic sampling
A method of sampling which uses equal intervals between each subject
Give an example of systematic sampling
Every 3rd person in the line would be selected
What is volunteer sampling
Where participants willingly choose to take part in the study
Give an example of volunteer sampling
Milgram: participants chose to join the experiment through an advert
What is opportunity sampling
When the sample is already accessible for the researcher
Give an example of opportunity sampling
Town centre surveys
With 1 being most representative and 5 being least representative, rank the sampling methods
1) stratified sampling
2) random sampling
3) systematic sampling
4) volunteer sampling
5) opportunity sampling
