Salts from insoluble bases Flashcards
what are bases
compounds that neutralise acids
alkalis are what in water
soluble bases such as the hydroxides
acid + base
acid + base -> salt + water
salts are made from what (ions)
positive metal ions and negative ion from acid
where can the positive ion come from
metal, base or a carbonate
what do salts have (charge)
no overall charge
what charge does HCl have
no
what charge do nitrate ions have
-1
what charge do surface ions have
-2
method for making
1.place some sulfuric acid in a conical flask and warm it in a water bath
2. add a spatula of copper oxide powder to the acid and stir with a glass rod
3. continue adding copper oxide powder until it is in
excess
4. filter the mixture to remove the excess copper oxide
pour the filtrate (the copper sulfate solution) into an evaporating basin
5. heat the copper sulfate solution to evaporate half of the water
6. pour the solution into a watch glass and leave to allow all of the water to evaporate
