Salts And Acid Base Chemistry Flashcards
Base + acid –>
Salt + water
What is the difference between an alkali and a base?
A base is insoluble in water but bases that dissolve in water are alkalis
Metal carbonate + acid –>
Salt + water + carbon dioxide
Alkali + acid –>
Salt + water
Are neutralisation reactions exothermic or endothermic? And what is the ionic equation?
Exothermic.
H+ + OH- –> H2O
Why is ammonia alkaline?
Because when it dissolves in water it becomes ammonium hydroxide solution and a hydroxide is alkaline
Ammonia + acid –>
Salt
What are the three ways soluble salts can be made from acids?
Reacting acids with a metal, an insoluble base or an alkali
Describe how you would make a salt from a solid
Add the solid to some dilute acid until no more will dissolve and warm over a Bunsen burner to increase rate of reaction and the filter the solution to remove any unreacted solid. Leave solution in an evaporating dish until nearly all of the solution has been evaporated and salt crystals should appear
Describe how to make a salt from an alkali
Place 25cm3 of alkali in a conical flask and add some universal indicator. Using a burette, add acid until the acid has been neutralised while noting the volume of acid needed for neutralisation. Repeat experiment but without indicator and place solution in evaporating dish until it is nearly all gone and salt crystals will appear
How is an insoluble salt made?
By mixing two solutions each containing one part of the salt
What is the solid product called when two solutions are mixed together?
A precipitate
