6
Q
State the steps to obtain a soluble group 1 salt, sodium chloride.
A
- Pipette a fixed volume (25.0 cm3) of aqueous sodium hydroxide, NaOH in a
conical flask. - Add a few drops of methyl orange into aqueous sodium hydroxide. The methyl
orange becomes yellow in alkaline solution. - Fill up a burette with dilute hydrochloric acid, HCl. Note the initial burette reading.
- Add hydrochloric acid from the burette slowly into the conical flask until the methyl orange indicator turns from yellow to orange. Record the final burette reading.
- Repeat the titration using the same volume of acid and alkali but without any indicator, to prepare pure sodium chloride solution.
7
Q
What method to prepare to make insoluble salts such as lead (II) chloride
A
Precipitation
8
Q
What method to prepare a soluble salt such as magnesium sulfate?
A
Acid reaction with excess reactant
