Q

State the steps to obtain a soluble group 1 salt, sodium chloride.

A
  1. Pipette a fixed volume (25.0 cm3) of aqueous sodium hydroxide, NaOH in a
    conical flask.
  2. Add a few drops of methyl orange into aqueous sodium hydroxide. The methyl
orange becomes yellow in alkaline solution.
  3. Fill up a burette with dilute hydrochloric acid, HCl. Note the initial burette reading.
  4. Add hydrochloric acid from the burette slowly into the conical flask until the methyl orange indicator turns from yellow to orange. Record the final burette reading.
  5. Repeat the titration using the same volume of acid and alkali but without any indicator, to prepare pure sodium chloride solution.
