Salt Preperation Flashcards
Acid and alkali to make a soluble salt
TITRATION
Acid should be added SLOWLY
Stop when pH is exactly 7
A neutral solution tells us the solution only contains salt and water
This is done by TITRATION using an indicator to see when the pH is exact 7
Indicator used should be phenolphthalein as it goes from pink to colourless
Soluble salt from an acid and an INSOLUBLE base (eg. Sulfuric acid + copper oxide powder)
HEAT ACID
Add EXCESS copper oxide to ensure all the acid reacts
Leftover copper oxide is filtered out to leave a solution of salt and water
Gently heat to evaporate some of the water
Leave remaining to evaporate SLOWLY (crystallisation)
Insoluble salt
Two solutions of soluble salts
If precipitate forms an insoluble salt has formed
Filter and wash with distilled water
Neutralising an acid
Add small portions of a powdered metal hydroxide
Fixed volume of acid
Record ph after each addition
