Salon ecology Flashcards
Microbiology
Study of small living organisms called microbes, such as bacteria
Bacteria
One called microorganisms
Nonpathogenic
Nondisease producing bacteria
Pathogenic
Disease causing bacteria ; communicable
Infection
Multiplication of pathogenic bacteria to the extent that it disrupts baseline health
Cocci
Round-shaped cells, singularly or in groups.
Types: staphylococci (pus forming, staph infection), streptococci(pus forming, strep), diplococci (pneumonia)
Bacilli
Common, bar or rod; fever, tetanus, fevers
Spirilla
Spiral or corkscrew; syphilis, cholera
Where does bacteria thrive?
Warm, damp environments
Active bacteria
Reproduce and grow rapidly
Inactive bacteria
No growth, can quickly turn active in right conditions
Viruses
Smaller than bacteria, needs live host to thrive. Vaccines can be preventative, but otherwise viruses can’t be treated with antibiotics.
External parasites
Small organism that lives off of host
Examples of parasites
Scabies, itch mite, lice, ringworm
Means of transmission
Contagious pathogenic bacteria can transmit thru the air. Blood born pathogens (I.e. HIV) are transmitted via blood contact or bodily fluids.
