Salivary Glands Flashcards
Surface projection of parotid gland
- Pyramidal-shaped, salivary gland with dense capsule
- Superficial part anterior to auricle
- Deep part posterior and medial to ramus of mandible
- Connected with vestibule of oral cavity by parotid duct
Surface projection of submandibular gland
- “C” shaped salivary gland (around posterior edge of mylohyoid muscle)
- Has capsule
- Has superficial and deep parts
- Has single duct
Parotid gland
• Pyramidal-shaped salivary gland with dense capsule
• Connected with vestibule of oral cavity by parotid duct
• Produces and secretes components of saliva
• Produces 25-30% of saliva
:
• Serous secretions only
Submandibular gland
- “C” shaped salivary gland (around posterior edge of mylohyoid muscle)
- Has capsule
- Produces and secretes components of saliva
- Produces 60-70% of saliva
- Serous (primarily) and mucous secretions
Parotid duct
- Passes anteriorly on external surface of masseter muscle
- Connects parotid gland with vestibule of oral cavity
- Transports parotid gland secretions
- Ends in vestibule of oral cavity opposite 2nd maxillary molar
Masseter m.
- Elevation of mandible (e.g., closing mouth)
- Protraction of mandible
- Trigeminal nerve (mandibular division - CN V3)
Buccal fat pad
- Globular, encapsulated fat body
- Prominent in infants
- Prevents collapse of cheeks during suckling
Mandible
- U-shaped bone
- Each side consists of body (horizontal) and ramus (vertical) with coronoid and condylar processes
- Mental protuberance forms point of chin
- Contains alveoli (“sockets”) for teeth
- Contributes to temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
Gingivae
- Composed of non-glandular oral mucosa
- Covers alveolar processes of mandible, and maxilla, and necks of teeth
- Food and bacteria between gums and teeth can cause inflammation (gingivitis)
Mylohyoid m.
- Elevation of floor of mouth
- Trigeminal nerve (mandibular division - CN V3)
- Four suprahyoid muscles: digastric, geniohyoid, mylohyoid, and stylohyoid
- A raphe is a “seam” where two structures meet
Sublingual gland
- Flat, thin, almond-shaped salivary gland
- Does not have capsule
- Multiple ducts
- Produces and secretes components of saliva
- Produces 3-5% of saliva
- Mucous (primarily) and serous secretions
Lingual n.
• General sensation
• Special sensation
General sensation:
• Anterior 2/3 of tongue
Special sensation:
• Taste from anterior 2/3 of tongue (lingual nerve > chorda tympani nerve > facial nerve)
• Lingual nerve is branch of mandibular nerve (CN V3)
Submandibular duct
- Opens into oral cavity proper
- Ends at sublingual papilla on frenulum of tongue
- 5 cm in length
- Transmits submandibular gland secretions
- Lingual nerve “loops” under duct
Sublingual papilla
- Paired, small, fleshy, raised mound
* Has opening(s) for submandibular duct
