Parotid (serous)- most tumours
Submandibular (mixed)- most stones
Sublingual (mucous)
What are signs of salivary gland malignancy
Short history Painful Hot skin Hard Fixed CNVII involvement
What is the prevalence of salivary gland malignancy?
Most tumours occur in parotid gland
80% of them are benign pleomorphic adenomas
What are signs of a pleomorphic adenoma?
Middle aged
Slow growing
Painless lump
What are signs of Warthin’s tumour?
Male Middle aged Soft More mobile Fluctuant
What are signs of salivary gland stones?
Pain/swelling made worse by eating
Can become infected leading to Ludwigs Angina
What is Ludwigs Angina?
Progressive cellulitis that invades the floor of the mouth and soft tissues of the neck
Neck swelling/dysphagia/fever
Emergency as airway obstruction can occur very quickly after
Management
-airway support and IV abx
