What are some possible differentials for submandibular swellings in dogs?
Salivary gland conditions (sialadenitis, sialadenosis, mucocele, neoplasia, sialolithiasis), lymph node pathology (lymphadenitis, reactive hyperplasia, metastatic neoplasia), soft tissue pathology (cellulitis, abscess).
What diagnostic imaging modalities can aid in diagnosing diseased salivary glands?
Ultrasound, Computed Tomography (CT), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
What are the common clinical signs for submandibular swellings?
Often non-specific and widely variable, including clinical signs involving the oropharynx, ophthalmic signs, and systemic signs
What are the two most common diagnoses of the salivary glands and % ?
50%Sialadenitis and 20% neoplasia.
What is the average salivary gland width in dogs?
Normal canine salivary gland width is ~30 mm
Which breeds are more prone to salivary gland neoplasia and which breeds are more prone to sialadenitis
Poodles, Dachshund, Australian Silky Terrier neoplasia
Older medium to large breed dogs have more sialadenitis
