Q

What occurs in the striated ducts which form the secondary secretion?

A
  • Na+ and Cl- are reabsorbed from duct
  • K+ and HCO3- secreted into saliva
  • becomes hypotonic

Q

How does the flow rate affect the composition of saliva in terms of iso/hypotonic?

A

LOW FLOW RATE
- more chance for reabsorption and secretion in striated duct = more hypotonic
HIGH FLOW RATE
- less time for reabsorption and secretion in striated duct = composition more similar to primary secretion.
