Salivary Composition Secretion Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 main functions of saliva?
A
Lubrication
Digestive functions/enzymes
Oral hygiene/mineralising
2
Q
What are the names of the 3 main salivary glands?
A
Parotid
Submandibular
Sublingual
3
Q
What occurs in the striated ducts which form the secondary secretion?
A
- Na+ and Cl- are reabsorbed from duct
- K+ and HCO3- secreted into saliva
- becomes hypotonic
4
Q
How does the flow rate affect the composition of saliva in terms of iso/hypotonic?
A
LOW FLOW RATE
- more chance for reabsorption and secretion in striated duct = more hypotonic
HIGH FLOW RATE
- less time for reabsorption and secretion in striated duct = composition more similar to primary secretion.
