Classification (Type) of Drug
(Hint: there are two of them)
Bronchodilator
Sympathomimetic
Indications of Salbutamol
Bronchospasm
(Wheezing, or partial silence in lungs aka no air in there no more)
Contraindications
Known allergy/sensitivity to Ventolin (same drug)
Hemodynamically significant tachycardia (>150 HR w/shock concerns)
Cautions
Full breathing assessment before & after giving drug
Beta-2 agonists can decrease serum potassium & increase serum glucose
Dosage for adult (nebulized and puffer)
Nebulized: 5mg
Puffer: 4 x 100mcg, can repeat up to 3 times
Before giving puffer what must you do?
Shake for at least 15s (15-30s shaking)
ALSO! Pull medicine out of puffer to check label
How is ventolin eliminated from the body?
Metabolized in liver
Pediatric Dosing (nebulized and MDI)
Nebulized: 2.5 mg for less than 1 year, 5 mg for over 1 year
MDI: NONE for children less than 10kg
- 10-20kgs: 5 x 100mcg, repeat up to 3 times
- >20 kgs: 10 x 100mcg, repeat up to 3 times
