Step 1. Takbir
After declaring (niyyah) their intentions and performing wudu, they say “Allahu Akbar” (God is supreme)
What if Takbir for?
To make sure they’re in the right mindset to communicate with God
Step 2. Qiyam
Muslims recite Al-Fatiha (1st chapter of the Qur’an) asking for Allah’s guidance
Step 3. Ruku
Muslims say ‘Glory be to my Great Lord and praise be to him’ to show respect
Step 4. Sujud
Muslims say ‘Glory be to my Lord, the most supreme. Allah is greater than all else’
What is Sujud for?
To remember the oneness of God
Step 5. Jalsa
Muslims say “Peace be upon you and the mercy and blessings of God” followed with a personal prayer
What does Muslims do before prayer?
- Dress modestly/appropriately
- Perform wudu
Why do Muslims perform Wudu?
- To purify the mind and body
- To begin you prayer with the right intentions
