He is naive and proud of his father’s skill as a sailmaker although he isn’t working as one
“Yer da sells stuff on the never never and collects money roon the doors. He’s a tick man”

This shows that he is realistic like his father, unlike Alec who is naive

He is practical like his father Billy who doesn’t value school as much as Alec and Davie
“Ah’m shattered”
Davie
Davie is depressed and struggles to cope with his grief
“But that wasnae yer fault!”
Billy
This shows that he is caring and worries for his brother, Davie
“C’mon Billy, ah dae ma best. it’s just…”
Davie
He tries to make excuses for the situation that he is in
“Ah don’t mind helpin ye out, but ah’m no exactly rollin in it myself”
Billy
This shows that he is caring and helps Davie financially even though he himself doesn’t have much money
At the very end of the play, Alec goes to university to keep going with his education, leaving his father behind in poverty ridden Glasgow
Alec
This shows that Alec is smart as he is going on with school
This also shows that he is ready to leave his father and move on with his life
