Sailing Maneuvers Flashcards
Name at least three ways of telling wind direction
Feel, flags, boats in moorings, ripples in water, telltales
How do you make your boat start moving ahead?
Pull in the sail to the verge of a luff and straighten the tiller
How do you know when your sail is set for maximum efficiency?
When in the sail is at the “verge of a luff”
What is heading up? How do you head up?
Steering the bow of your boat toward the wind. / Push the tiller towards the sail.
What is bearing off? How do you bear off?
Steering the bow of your boat away from the wind / Push the tiller away from the sail.
What is sailing close hauled or upwind?
Sailing as close as possible to the eye of the wind without going into the irons
What is coming about or tacking?
Maneuvering your boat so that the bow of the boat goes through the irons and comes out on the other side. (close haul to close haul on the opposite tack.) / Push the tiller towards the sail, move to the other side of the boat, duck when the boom changes side, swap hands with the tiller and mainsheet, and center the tiller only after the sail has refilled with wind.
What is gybing? How do you gybe?
Maneuvering your boat so that the stern of the boat goes through the eye of the wind and comes out on the opposite side. (Run to a reach on the opposite tack.) / Center your body weight, bear off, swap hands with the tiller and mainsheet, move to the other side of the boat, duck as the boom changes sides, and center the tiller right away.
What is safety position?
Point the boat upwind to close the reach (NOT irons), with the sail luffing.
How do you decide which way to land at the dock? How do you come to a stop?
Land into the wind. / Sail into the irons. / Lower your sail
How do you get out of the irons?
Push your tiller and boom out to the same side until your boat has turned out of the irons.
