What should you know about the safety equipment (first aid kit, eyewash station, safety shower, fire extinguisher, fire blanket)?
locations and operating procedures; also know where fire alarm and exits are located
Should your work area be well ventilated?
Yes, use a fume hood when working with volatile substances or poisonous vapors. Never place your head into the fume hood.
How should you dispose of chemical waste?
never mix chemicals in sink drains (they are only for water and substances specified by teacher). Solid chemicals, metals, matches, filter paper, and other insoluble materials are to be disposed of in the proper waste containers, not in the sink. Check waste container labels twice before adding chemical waste to container.
Can you leave your lab station and wander around the classroom during a lab?
No, you must personally monitor your lab experiments
Can students come into the science storage rooms?
only with teacher permission
What should you do if there is a fire drill during a lab period?
close containers, and turn off gas valves, fume hoods, and electrical equipment
When using knives/sharp objects…
carry with tips pointing out and down; cut away from you; never try to catch falling sharp instruments; grasp sharp instruments only by handles
