Safety More Stuff Flashcards
What is the guard rail height?
What does grabbing your fist mean?
Shutter Down
(Horizontal) attached harness and lanyard does not need (CSA) approval.
- less than 4 workers at a time
-3/4 inch diameter wire rope
-6 feet away from edge lanyard from edge
(Vertical) attached harness and lanyard must be (CSA) approved.
-could be synthetic or wired rope
Double choker sling
(hang on anchor)
Parameters of extra low voltage to high voltage
Fall restraint
falling over edge
(PASS) stands for?
Point, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep
Combustible metals?
Aluminum, Magnesium, and Titanium
Identify Knot?
Air to Gas Ratio = ____
Range to ignite (Upper and Lower Limit)
Arc Faults detect base on:
-current for magnitude
-duration
-length of time between pulses
* not for particular waveform
Personal injury or Death
payable first work day after injury occurred unless:
-unless serious or willful misconduct of the worker
-unless death
-aggravate injury
Employee
must report any unsafe regulation or hazard
must have supervisor or foremen
Owner’s of Property
make sure workplace is safe to premise
Supplier’s
supply safe condition
-labelled (WHMIS) (SDS)
Work Report - as soon as possible & employer or board (workplace BC)
-immediate any death
-3 days notify board
Parallel Arc Fault - limited by resistance of the conductors in the circuit & not by the load
(continuous current) - typically much higher current - but for thermomagnetic circuit breaker
(intermittent short) - takes time to heat up - especially small conductors
Tool box talks - quick review meeting before start of work to bring up or mitigate hazards
Ground fault - path to ground other than intended path is established
Fire Retardent clothing
a typical motor-control centre - produce enough energy during an arc flash to kill a person 9 meters away
-especially crucial for maintenance with high power sources (transformers installations & motor-control centre)
Confined space:
pitts and vaults
Permit Required confined space:
Hoppers, Steam pipe area, and Chemical Pitt
less than 19.5 % is considered oxygen deficient
6% difficulty breathing (Death in minutes)
14% Faulty judgement (Rapid fatigue)
16% Impaired judgement and breathing
21% normal
Hazardous vapors - blindness, burns, death, and sickness
Liquid chemicals - blindness, burns, death, and sickness
Potentially infectious materials - blindness, death, and sickness
Flying Debris - blindness, death, and sickness
Molten metal - blindness, burns, and death
Fire needs fuel, oxygen, and heat
Class A (green) - wood, paper, cloth, and ordinary trash
Class B (red) - gasoline, oils, paints, and propane
Class C (blue) - electrical fire
Class D (yellow) - magnesium and titanium
Class K (black) - cooking oils, animal and vegetable fats, and grease
Fire extinguisher maintenance:
-inspect (monthly)
-get professional to inspect or test annually
-undergo maintenance every 3, 6, and 12 years
-undergo hydrostatic testing every 6 years (ABC extinguisher is every 12 years)
Apply appropriate supplier labels to controlled products and all containers of controlled products, except when:
-intended for export
-shipment in bulk
-product is imported for the purpose of labelling or repackaging
-controlled products are distributed in multi container shipments.
Physical hazard - based on the physical or chemical properties of the product - such as flammability, reactivity, or corrosivity to metals.
Health hazards - based on the ability of the product to cause a health effect - such as eye irritation, respiratory sensitization (may cause allergy or asthma symptoms or breathing difficulties if inhaled), or carcinogenicity (may cause cancer).
Hazard Categories
High - 1 to 1A to 1B to 1c
Low - 3A to 3B to 3C to 4
Products (Completely) Exempted from WHMIS legislation:
- Wood and products made of wood
- Tobacco and tobacco products
- Manufactures articles
- Products being transported or handed under TDG legislations
Products (Partially) Exempted from WHMIS legislation:
- Radioactive Materials
- Consumer Products
- Cosmetics, Medical Devices, Food, Drugs
- Explosives
- Pesticides
WHMIS Pictograms:
Physical Hazards:
Gas cylinder
Flame
Flame over circle
Corrosion
Exploding bomb
Health Hazards:
Skull and Crossbones

Hierarchy of controls:
- Most Effective to…
Elimination (physically remove the hazard)
