By knowing the safety margins and what can happen if you don’t drive within them.

When you’re travelling on a long downhill stretch of road, control your speed by selecting a lower gear and using your brakes carefully.
What can excessive braking on hills cause?
Your brakes to overheat and become less effective.
Should you coast?
No.
What is coasting?
Travelling in neutral or with the clutch disengaged (pressed down).
What can coasting cause?
Can reduce your control over the car.
Why should you leave enough room between your vehicle and the one in front so that you can pull up safely?
If it slows down or stops suddenly.
What is your overall stopping distance?
The distance your car travels from the moment that you realise you must brake to the moment your car stops.
What is thinking distance + braking distance?
Stopping distance?
What is thinking distance?
Distance travelled in the time it takes to react to situation.
What is braking distance?
Distance travelled from when you start to use the brakes to when your car completely stops.
