Safety Introduction Flashcards
Eleven general safety practices are _______.
Smart Workers Respect Neatness, Keeping Materials Properly Organized, and Use Reasonable Knowledge Safely.
- Safety First - Always think safety first before operating.
-
Wear safety glasses/face shields in danger zones.
3.** Report minor injuries** - even the minor injuries can become dangerous. - Notify the teacher of unsafe conditions.
- Keep the floor clear of scraps and sawdust.
- Make sure stacks of lumber are stable and they will not shift or fall.
- Place clamped stock securely so it will not shift or fall.
- Organize all used rags in a metal fireproof container.
- Use dust collection systems or dust masks in dusty conditions.
- Respect others’ rights and property.
- Keep lids on finishing containers when not in use.
Smart Workers Respect Neatness, Keeping Materials Properly Organized, and Use Reasonable Knowledge Safely.
Ten (10) considerations for working safely with tools & equipment are _______.
**Prepare Files Sharp, Carry Stock Away Responsibly, Store Cleanly, Close Carefully.
- Prepare - Make sure tools are properly assembled and adjusted before using.
- Files - Do not use a file without a securely attached handle.
- Sharp - Make sure all cutting tools are sharp. A dull tool is dangerous.
- Carry - Carry sharp tools with cutting edges down and not in your pocket.
- Stock - Be sure all stock is secure BEFORE cutting when using hand or power tools.
- Always - Cut away from your body when using edge (sharp) tools.
- Responsibly - Report ALL broken tools to your teacher immediately. Do NOT use a damaged tool.
- Store - Always store tools properly. Tools are damaged frequently, or an injury may occur, because a tool was improperly stored.
- Cleanly - Avoid blowing or brushing sawdust into anyones eyes. Do NOT rub your eyes and avoid creating excessive amounts of dust.
- Close - Close vise handles so they do not project (stick out) into the aisles and DO NOT overtighten.
Prepare Files Sharp, Carry Stock Away Responsibly, Store Cleanly, Close Carefully.
Sixteen (16) considerations for working with and around machines are _______.
- Have teacher’s permission to use the machine.
- Have the teacher check your setup before using a machine.
- Use machine guards. Get permission to remove a guard. Do not leave a machine unattended without a guard.
- Be sure everyone is out of the danger/safety zone around a machine before beginning an operation.
- Stay Alert! Keep your mind on the operation of the machine at all times. Do not talk to anyone operating a machine. Do not operate machines when not feeling well or are on certain medications.
- Work with the capacity of the machine. Do not attempt operations beyond its limits.
- Turn off the machine before making any adjustments.
- Remove the plug from the outlet or turn off the breaker before making changes to a setup.
- The machine operator is in full charge of the machine.
- Ask for assistance prior to beginning a cut on long or heavy pieces.
- Wear safety clothing. E.g. roll up your sleeves, wear shoes or boots, remove loose fitting clothing, do not wear ties or dangling jewelry, and tie long hair back.
- Use a push stick to cut short or narrow stock.
- Make sure all cutting edges of blades or bits are sharp.
- Turn off the equipment you are using after each use.
- Inspect stock prior to beginning a cut. Look for loose knots and twists that might bind a tool.
- Wear ear protection when operating tools with high noise levels.
Eight (8) safety rules that we MUST follow when using the jointer are _______.
Stand Left, Depth Check, Push Safely, Length Matters, Hands High, Follow Through, Smooth Stock, Sharp Knives
- Stand Left – Stand on the left side.
- Depth Check – 1/16” depth of cut.
- *Push Safely – Use a push block or stick.
- *Length Matters – Stock should be at least 200mm in length.
- Hands High – Keep hands above the guard.
- Follow Through – Follow through till the guard closes.
- Smooth Stock – Stock should be free of knots and splits.
- Sharp Knives – Keep knives sharp.
Stand to the left, keep cuts light.
Push with a block, your length is right (200mm min).
Hands stay high, follow through.
Smooth, strong stock and sharp knives too.
Four (4) set up procedures for the jointer are _______.
Alligators Chase Small Ducks
Adjust fence angle
Check guard for spring
Set fence angle
Set Depth of cut
Five (5) specific safety rules for the band saw are _______.
Flat Adjustments Prevent Risky Blade Movements.
Flat – Keep work flat on the table.
Adjust – Adjust upper guide assembly 5-10mm above the wood.
Prevent – Make adjustments when the machine is OFF and STOPPED.
Relief – Make relief cuts for concave curves.
Blade – Keep fingers and hands away from the path of the blade.
Movements – Make short cuts first, then long cuts.
The two (2) most commonly used power tools _______.
