Safety Exam Flashcards
What type of light is emitted while arc welding?
- Ultraviolet light….not visible; most dangerous light
- Infrared light…not visible; felt as heat
- Visible light
How does the light affect your body?
It can cause serious burns to the eyes/skin, vision loss, flash burn
What precautions should be taken when working in confined spaces?
A ventilation system to prevent breathing in toxic fumes.
When talking about regulators, what does the term “creep” refer to?
The term “creep” refers to rising pressure on the working side of the regulator.
An increase in outlet pressure typically caused by regulator seat leakage
What is a regulator and what is its function?
A regulator reduces the high cylinder or system pressure to the proper lower working pressure.
What are some different types of regulators?
- low pressure reg -cylinder reg
- high pressure reg -manifold reg
- single-stage reg -line reg
- dual-stage reg
Is it safe to oil a regulator?
Noooooooo, oiling a regulator could cause a fire or explosion.
What do the gauges represent on a regulator?
- Working Pressure Gauge: shows the pressure at the regulator and not the torch
- Cylinder Pressure: shows the pressure at which the gas is stored in the cylinder. Tells you how much gas remains in the cylinder.
What metals emit toxic fumes?
Know at least five main ones.
Lead, Cadmium, Zinc, Chromium, Mercury, Copper, Beryllium
What is metal fume fever? Cause? Symptoms?
Inhalation of Zinc oxide fumes can occur when welding or cutting galvanized material. Exposure to these fumes can cause metal fume fever. It has flu-like symptoms.
What is Phosgene gas and how is it created while welding?
Phosgene is formed when UV radiation decomposes chlorinated hydrocarbon. Comes from solvents (such as degreasing material, refrigerants) that decompose in the arc.
This is why you should always clean your metal before welding!!!
Why is it important to clean your work pieces before welding?
Cleaning the metal removes oil, paint, galvanized coating, degreasing material, etc that can produce toxic fumes.
Also, the cleaner the metal, the better the weld.
Why is it important to have forced ventilation and when is it mandatory?
Small shops or shops with many welders (areas that have less than 10,000 ft^3 per welder or ceilings lower than 16 ft) require forced ventilation to remove toxic fumes.
What is the best material to use for protective clothing while welding?
#1 leather #2 wool #3 100% cotton
What are the types of fire extinguishers and how are they designated?
Type A-used for combustible solids (paper, wood, cloth) Green triangle
Type B-used for combustible liquids (oil, gas, paint thinner) red rectangle
Type C-used for electrical fires (motor fire, fuse box) blue circle
Type D-used for combustible metals (magnesium, zinc, titanium) yellow star
