- Treat every firearm as loaded
- Always point firearms in a safe direction
- Finger off the trigger unless ready to fire
- Check your firing zone (Target and back drop)

Safe direction definition
A
A true direction may be found on a shooting range, however, in other places an ideal safe direction is defined as one in which if an unintentional discharge occurs, only minor property damage and no human injury will result.

A
A seizure or forcible restraint; an exercise of the power to deprive a person of his liberty; the taking or keeping of a person in custody by legal authority, especially, in response to a criminal charge or detainment under certain legislation

7 principals of dealing with an armed offender
A
- Ongoing TENR assessment
- Better to take matters to seriously than to lightly
- Caution is not cowardice
- When offender actions permit, focus on de escalation (comms, prevention, cordon, wait)
- Never go unnecessarily into danger. However is the offenders action are likely to cause casualties police must act immediately to prevent this.
- Treat all armed offenders/believed to be armed offenders as dangerous and hostile until there is evidence otherwise.
- Where practical police should not use a firearm unless it can be done without danger to others.
