Safety Flashcards
What is a risk assessment?
A document assessing the type of hazard, the level of risk, who might be affected by the hazard, and a description of control measures taken to minimise the risk associated with using specific materials and manufacturing processes.
Can you name three hazards in the use of a child’s ride on plastic car?
Entrapment in mechanisms or moving parts
Tipping over
Toxic materials and finishes
Accident through use e.g. road traffic incident
Can you name two hazards in the manufacture of a child’s ride on plastic car?
Toxic fumes
Molten polymer
Hot products (post moulding)
What does COSHH stand for?
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (2002). Designed to protect employees in the workplace.
Can you name two COSHH areas of regulation?
Make the workplace safe and free from risks to health
Ensure machinery is safe and safe working practices are followed
Ensure dangerous items and substances are removed and stored safely
Provide information, training and supervision as necessary for health and safety
Can you state two ways in which a manufacturer might address safety?
Safe zones, e.g. clearly marked walkways
Safety screens - when laser cutting, plasma cutting and electric arc welding
Guarding - these could be light beams that stop the machines if they the beams are broken
PPC - personal protective clothing
Use of robots - to take out the heavy lifting during the manufacturing process
What marks might you see on a product to show that it is safe to use for consumers?
CE - an EU directive to show that the manufacture has conformed to the directive applicable to the product
BSI Kitemark - has been tested against agreed standards by the British Standards Institute
Can you name a product area where EU and DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) safety directives can be applied?
General product safety
Machines
Toy safety
Noise emission from domestic products
Low voltage electrical equipment
