define dental neglect
persistent failure to meet a child’s basic oral health needs, likely to result in serious impairment of child’s oral health or general development
what could suggest wilful neglect
after problems have been pointed out there is still failure to attend, failure to complete treatment, patient returning in pain, repeated GA
what indicates dental neglect
obvious dental disease to untrained people ie teachers
poor dental health impacts the child (cant sleep, cant eat, can’t concentrate in school)
practical care offered but child not returned for treatment
what are the three stages of managing dental neglect
preventive dental team management
preventive multi agency management
child protection referral
discuss the method of preventive dental team management
raise concerns with patient
offer support
set targets
keep records
monitor progress
discuss the method of preventive multi agency management
liaise with other professionals (school nurse, health visitor) to see if concerns are shared
child may be part of common assessment framework at this level
check if the child is subject to a child protection plan
agree joint plan of action, review at agreed intervals
letter to health visitor of children <5 who fail appointments and have failed to respond to letter from dental practice
discuss the method of a child protection referral
complex or deteriorating situations
follow local guidelines
referral to social services by phone then followed up in writing
refer with as much detail as possible, make a note of who you spoke to and what was discussed

if the child is not in danger - investigation, initial assessment, discussion then no further child protection or a joint investigation
