preparing BATTERY for winter driving
check charge and water level in the battery
preparing BRAKES for winter driving
be sure all four brakes are engaging equally
preparing MUFFLER for winter driving
have it checked for leaks–> a leaking muffler or exhaust system can create a carbon monoxide hazard

the most common causes of highway crashes in NB ARE:
- Inattention
- Operating too fast for conditions
- Failure to grant right of way
- Alcohol
- driver distraction
- view obscured
- following too closely
- improper use of lanes
these conditions can only be met safely with a reduction in speed
- poor visibility
- wet or slippery highway
- pedestrians and/or animals on or near the highway
- heavy traffic
- illness, tiredness or nervous tension
when the speed is ____ the impact is ___
doubled, four times as great
under normal conditions, the average reaction time is about…
3/4 of a second.
in 3/4 of a second, your car travelling at 50km/h will go…
10 meters
before driving, adjust…
seat mirrors seat belts headrest controls foot controls steering wheel
always use your_____ to operate the ____ pedals
right foot, accelerator and brake pedals
use your ____ to clutch in standard gear shift vehicles
left foot
keep both hands on the steering wheel, usually at ____
the 10 and 2 o’ clock positions
this is a common cause of highway collisions
following too closely or tailgating
how long should the distance be between two cars?
two seconds (for favourable driving conditions)
defensive driving
driving in anticipation of possible collision situations and being prepared to avoid them
if you arrive first at a collision:
prevent a second crash reduce fire hazard attend first do not move the injured get help
prevent a second crash
pull completely off the road, far enough to protect the vehicles from more collisions
reduce fire hazard
turn of ignition of damaged vehicles
in case of fire, try to put it out with a fire extinguisher, dirt, or heavy fire retardant blanket
attend first
…to anyone who is not breathing or bleeding severely.
(for blood) put cleanest available pad directly on wound and apply pressure. if pad becomes bloodsoaked, leave it on, put another on top
do not move the injured
…unless they are in a burning car or other immediate danger
if you are not trained in first aid, you can help the injured by:
covering them with blankets or coats to keep them warm
loosening collars, ties, and belts
calming them
in a real emergency, to help a person start breathing
- remove anything in the persons mouth that might block air.
- punch nose shut, seal mouth with yours, blow into mouth
- remove mouth, take deep breath, blow in air again, every 5 seconds for an adult and every 3 for an infant
- if chest fails to rise and you hear no exhaling, recheck mouth for blockage, start technique again
- if you cannot obtain a tight seal over the person’s mouth, close mouth and breath ineo nose. for an infant, breathe into both mouth and nose
