Initiation
This category assists in our daily journeys of conversion and reconciliation.
Healing
This category is directed towards the salvation of others; if they contribute as well to personal salvation, it is through service to others that they do so
Mission and Service
Who is the origin of the sacraments?
“Instituted by Christ”
Jesus is the origin as he is the FIRST sacrament of His Father
What is the nature of the sacraments?
Matter: material realities and human gestures
Form: words said by the minister
What is the purpose of the sacraments?
To sanctify the recipient , build up the Church, and give worship to the Father

Matter: natural water
Form: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
Baptism
Identify the sacrament based on its NATURE.
Matter: imposition of hands and anointing with chrism
Form: “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Confirmation
Identify the sacrament based on its NATURE.
Matter: wheat bread and natural grape wine
Form: “At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his Passion, he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying…”
Holy Eucharist
Identify the sacrament based on its NATURE.
Matter: sins committed after baptism
Form: “ “God the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of his Son, has reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins..”
Penance/Reconciliation
Identify the sacrament based on its NATURE.
Matter: Oil
Form: “Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin, save you, and raise you up.”
Anointing of the Sick

Matter: imposition of hands
Form: adherence to the prayer of consecration for each order
Holy Orders

Free exchange of consent between the bride and groom
Matrimony/ Marriage
Sacraments are accompanied by special signs that produce what they signify. These are the external, sensibly perceptible signs
“Efficacious signs of grace”
No human power could attach an inward grace to an outward sign, only God could do that. During his public ministry, Jesus fashioned seven sacraments

By Christ’s will, the Church oversees the celebration of the sacraments

The fruit of the sacramental life is that the Spirit of adoption makes the faithful partakers in the divine nature by uniting them in a living union with the only Son, the Savior.
