How Christians understand the relationship between God and suffering
Suffering is a part of human condition
- suffering is a result of our past actions
- we suffer as punishment for our sins
- humans create suffering for each other
- suffering leads to a greater good
The three aspects of anointing of the sick
Prayer of faith
- entire community asks God for help for the sick, in a spirit of trust and in response in God’s word
Laying on of hands
- a sign of blessing and a gesture signifying coming of the Holy Spirit
- the priest or bishop lays his hands on the one healing like Jesus, who did this often
Anointing with blessed oil
- a sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit
Shift in understanding anointing of the sick after Vatican II
Restored it to the original purpose: to be a strengthening and healing grace for those who are seriously ill or in the frailty of old age
- no longer necessary to wait until one is at the point of death before asking for the sacrament
Last rites
Number of rites which may be gone to help prepare someone for death
- includes reconciliation, anointing of the sick, Eucharist by viaticum
Anointing of the sick effects
- union of the sick person to Christ
- strength, peace, and courage to endure the sufferings
- union with the church
- forgiveness of sins
- preparation for passing over to eternal life
- possibly the restoration of health
Be able to recall an effect of anointing of the sick and explain how the ritual makes the effect real
- union of the sick with Christ individuals to align their own suffering to the sufferings of Christ
- suffering can participate in God’s saving work
- suffering becomes redemptive
