SAC 1A Flashcards
define nervous system
a communication system that consists of networks of neurons that connect the brain, spinal cord and other parts of the body to each other via an electrical signal.
what are the three main functions of the nervous system?
- receive
- process
- coordinate
examples of sensory receptors
- ears, eyes, skin
what are the two divisions of the nervous system?
- central NS
- peripheral NS
what is the role of the central nervous system?
responds to sensory stimuli from the peripheral NS, coordinates the body with communication to different areas.
what are the two dimensions of the central nervous system?
Brain, spinal cord
what is the role of the brain in the central nervous system?
what we feel, think and do
what is the role of the spinal cord in the central nervous system?
connects the brain and the peripheral NS and initiates spinal reflexes
what are the three sections of the brain and what are they responsible for?
- hindbrain- survival functions
- midbrain- reticular function
- forebrain- complex processes like emotion
explain SAME
sensory
afferent
motor
efferent
what are the two divisions of the peripheral NS?
somatic and autonomic
what is the peripheral nervous system responsible for?
carries information to and from CNS and contains all nerves outside the CNS
what is the role of the somatic NS?
carries sensory information to the CNS and motor from CNS. controls concious and voluntary movements and skeletal muscles. and spinal reflex.
describe the role of the autonomic NS?
controls all non skeletal muscles like organs, unconcious movements
what are the two division of the autonomic NS?
- sympathetic
- parasympathetic
what is the role of the sympathetic NS?
responsible for responding to stress or a threat with the FFF response.
what is the role of the parasympathetic NS?
to return the body to homeostasis
what are the two types of reaction to stimuli
unconscious and conscious
what is the role of a neuron?
to receive and transmit an action potential
what is the role of the dendrites?
detects and receives neurotransmitters that contain an action potential and transmits it to the soma
what is the role of the soma?
it is the main cell body of a neuron that contains the nucleus
what is the role of the axon?
carry info by electrical signals to the axon terminals from the soma
what is the role of the myelin sheath?
- insulates axon
- protects axon
- speeds transmission
what is the role of the axon terminal?
end of the axon where terminal buds are located
what the two types of neurons?
sensory, motor
which is the lock and the key in the lock key process?
neurotransmitter = key
receptor site = lock
