Sac 1 Flashcards
Climatic Variation
climatic conditions are always different, therefore, australians flora and flauna must cope with many conditions which makes us unique
Biological Isolation
Seperation of Gondwana land over 50,000 years ago, when Australia became isolated.
Flora and Flauna lost their ability to interact with other species. Made them unique
Geological Stability
low tectonic and volcanic activity result in a flat landscape which is prone to fire and flood.
creates poor nutrient soil affecting the survival of flora and flauna.
Relationships- Perceptions (How they see the land)
Land filled with ancestors.
Land as their mother.
Mutual care, they care for the land and it will care back.
Relationships-Interactions (what they did)
Hunting and Gathering, hunted for animals, wild fruit, nuts.
Fire Stick Farming- Used this with their nomadic and semi-nomadic movements, to regenerate the nutrients in soil and plants.
Relationships- Impacts (The affect they had on the land)
Fire- from fire stick farming
Decline in Mega Fauna from hunting and gathering
Mega Fauna
Animals that lived in australia before humans first arrived.
Means Large animals.
Kinship
When you view the environment as being part of yourself and essential for your survival (aboriginal view)
European perceptions
- fear of harsh new distant place
- opportunity to start fresh- make a fortune
- no one owned the land (terra nullius)
- humans as improvers and tamers of the land
European Impacts
- initially small, due to numbers
- as population grew effects became larger
- reduced use of fires meant heavy under growth
- clearing of forests for farming and construction
- introduced species
European Interactions
- settlers struggled to live off the land as the aboriginals did
- development of towns and first cities - mostly near the coast
- exploration of the land for farms and adventure
- introduction of many species- animals for farming, hunting, companionship, plants for farming and homesickness
Aboriginals Contemporary Relationships w/ the land
- reduced access to the land and sacred sites
- relocation of whole communities
- loss of traditional practices
- as a result of this^ suffer from social issues such as poor physical and mental health, low education and income levels, alcohol and drug abuse etc
