The action of hot propellant gases of the tracer projectile overcomes the closure cup and ignites the tracer composition within a set distance of the muzzle.

The tracer projectile is designed to match the trajectory of the ball projectile and will continue to burn beyond the effective range of the ball ammunition. The burning of the composition in the tracer projectile emits light energy in the visible wavelength band and may be UNSUITABLE for use with night vision equipment.
