S4.8.2 Glossary Flashcards
Biofuel
A fuel made from plants
Anode
The positive electrode used in electrolysis
Bioleaching
Extracting metals from a solution, using bacteria
Cathode
The negative electrode used in electrolysis
Compound
Two or more different elements chemically bonded together.
Conduction
The transfer of energy from one vibrating particle to the next
Convection
Hotter particles move from hot to cool areas. Cooler particles are drawn in and heated, creating a convection current.
Displacement
A reaction where a more reactive element takes the place of a less reactive element in a compound.
Dissipate
Spread out
Electrolysis
The splitting of a compound using electricity
Energy efficiency
Proportion of energy transferred usefully compared to supplied
Finite
Something which will run out, is in limited supply
Insulation
Material which reduces heat loss
Leachate
A solution containing dissolved solids
Life cycle assessment
Assesses the environmental impact of a product or event
Lubricant
Substance which reduces friction between moving parts
Metal ore
A rock which contains a metal compound, which can be extracted
Non-renewable
A resource which cannot be replenished and will run out
Ore
Rocks containing metal compounds that can be extracted.
Oxidation
The loss of electrons, or gaining oxygen
Phytomining
Extracting metals from soil using plants
Radiation
The transfer of energy through waves.
Recycling
Converting waste into reusable material
Redox
A reaction where reduction and oxidation occur at the same time.
