S4.6.3 Glossary Flashcards
Attract
When two oppositely charged particles pull together
Compass
A small suspended bar magnet which aligns with the Earth’s magnetic field
Current
The flow of electrons through a conductor
Direct current
Current which only flows in one direction
Electromagnet
A solenoid with an iron core
Induced magnet
A magnet which is only magnetic when placed inside a magnetic field
Magnetic field
The area around a magnet where the magnetic force is felt
Magnetic flux density
A measure of the strength of magnetism, measured in Tesla
Motor effect
The effect where a force is exerted on a wire carrying a current in a magnetic field.
Permanent magnet
A magnet which produces its own magnetic field
Pole
The end of a magnet where the force is strongest
Repel
When two oppositely charged particles push away
Solenoid
A coil of wire which carries a current
Split ring commutator
A device which reverses the current in an electric motor every half turn
