S4.5.2 Glossary Flashcards
What is Avogadro’s constant?
The number of atoms, ions or molecules in one mole of a substance - 6.02 x 10^23
What does a chemical formula show?
It shows the number of each type of atom in a molecule.
What is a compound?
A substance made of two or more elements which are chemically joined.
What is concentration?
A measure of the amount of solute in a solution.
What is the conservation of mass?
The mass of the reactants is equal to the mass of the products.
What is an element?
A substance made of only one type of atom.
What is an isotope?
Atoms with the same atomic number but different mass number.
What is a limiting reactant?
The reactant in shortest supply that limits the rate of reaction.
What is a mole?
A quantity of a substance containing the same number of particles.
What is a product in a chemical reaction?
Substances made during a chemical reaction.
What is a reactant?
Substances used up during a chemical reaction.
What is relative atomic mass?
The mass of an atom, taking into account its isotopes.
What is relative formula mass?
The mass of a molecule found by adding together the mass of each atom.
