S3 Networks Flashcards
What is a LAN?
Local Area Network.
What is a WAN?
Wide Area Network.
What is a NIC?
Network Interface Card.
What is wireless?
Using radio waves or microwaves to transmit signals/data.
What is wired?
Using wires to transmit signals/data.
What is coaxial cabling?
Coaxial cabling is like UTP except better protected against interference.
What is Fibre Optic?
Fibre Optic sends light along glass wires to transmit signals/data.
What is Transmission Media?
Transmission media is whatever substance is used to transmit signals/data for example UTP.
What is UTP?
Unshielded Twisted Pair.
What is Stand-Alone?
A Stand-Alone computer is a computer that is not connceted to a network and works without being connected to another device.
What is a Network?
A Network is a group of computers connected together.
What is the Internet?
The internet is a world wide computer network used for sharing and storing data.
What is Peer to Peer?
On a Peer to Peer network there are no access levels and data can be stored and shared without a central server.
What is a Client Server?
A Client Server has access levels and needs a central server to store data.
What is a Hub?
The Hub is the central server/computer in a network.
What is Bandwidth?
Bandwidth is the speed of data transfer and is measured in bps. (bits per second)
What are the advantages of Networks?
Sharing data, sharing peripherals (printers…), easier to maintain, communication…
What are Peripherals?
Peripherals are things you can add on to a network for example a printer.
