S3- Chap 4 Dynamics II: Forces Flashcards
What are the effects of a force on the motion of a body (4)
-a body at rest moves
-a moving body increases in speed
-a moving body decreases in speed
-a moving body changes direction
What are the scenarios when acceleration is 0?
initial state of motion is
-stationary
-constant velocity
what are balanced forces
if resultant force acting on an object is 0, the forces acting on the object are balanced
what is Newton’s First Law of Motion
it states that every object will continue in its state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless a resultant force acts on it
what is inertia
the inertia of an object refers to the reluctance of the object to change its state of rest or motion, due to its mass.
what factors effect inertia of an object
how does it affect inertia
-mass
-greater mass, greater inertia
-harder to slow down, start moving, move faster, change direction
what is unbalanced forces
if the resultant force acting on an object is not 0, the forces acting on the object are unbalanced.
*take note that object cannot immediately stop
what is Newton’s second law of motion
it states that when a resultant force acts on an object of constant mass, the object will accelerate in the direction of the resultant force.
what is newton’s third law of motion
it states that if body A exerts a force F on body B, then body B will exert an equal and opposite force F on body A.
