malware
Malicious softwarewhich can affect the correct functioning of a computer system.
Virus
A program that copies itself by attaching itself to another program installed on your computer; when the infected program is launched, the virus will carry out damage to your system.
Worm
A malicious program which can copy itself and spread through a network connection.
Trojan
This program appears to be harmless, however once downloaded and launched it will also carry out unwanted actions such as installing unwanted toolbars etc.
RAT
Remote access trojan, can be used to give access to your computer to a hacker.
Rootkit
Software that enables a hacker to control your computer.
Diallers
A malicious program that takes control of your computer and uses it to dial expensive phone numbers.
Scareware
Scareware is false security software that tries to scare the user in to buying it by warning you about a ( non-existing ) threat on your system.
Keylogger
A program designed to record user keystrokes so that passwords, credit card numbers etc can be stolen from the user.
Spyware
Spyware programs gather information about you from your computer, eg personal information or information about which websites you have visited. Some spyware can also change some computer settings.
Adware
This software displays unwanted adverts on your computer without your permission.
Browser exploits
A malicious program that takes advantage of bugs / weaknesses in your browser to make it do something you don’t want eg crash, freeze, change settings.
OS exploits
Malicious code that takes advantage of weaknesses in your operating system.
P2P infection
Infected files which you receive when you download from a file-sharing ( peer to peer ) website.
Phishing
Attempting to obtain personal information such as bank details by fraud; usually claiming to be from a charity, bank, etc.
