S2: Education Flashcards
What is the difference between formal & informal education?
If I run for too long, I fall over.
And I drag myself off the path.
And I wait until I can run again.
So I don’t annoy the people nearby.
I fell over again.
But this time I was too slow.
A passing stranger watched me crawl.
And their gaze pierced my back.
When I laid by the side
The stranger held out an apple
Wispy and sun-struck, like the clouds of the setting sun.
They told me that If I ate the apple, It would carry my feet.
I bit the apple, and it sounded a crunch
The stranger tipped his hat to me, and left me by the road.
But now I could run again, So I did.
I ran
And ran
And ran
And ran
Until I collapsed again, the apple swamped in my gullet.
I dragged myself out of the way
Like so many times before
But a pair of feet stood in my way
It was the stranger again
I had run in a circle
He accused me of wasting his apple
And I simply bowed my head
And began to run
Round and round in circles
The stranger got angrier and angrier
He wanted his apple back
I was supposed to run forever with that apple
But now its gone.
And my legs are tired
I’ve collapsed again,
But I can’t drag myself this time
Not out of the way
Because the stranger stands before me.
He snickers at me
And he tells me of an apple
An apple that has the ability to make anyone happy for the rest of their lives.
“It lives just over there, atop that tree. Pick the apple, and I’ll forgive you for taking whats mine”
So I crawled
My exhausted body trailing behind me
And as I crawled, the stranger did things
He pulled me back, he sat on my legs, he stamped my hands
However, After many days, I managed to reach the tree
And I reached out to begin the climb
But my arms wouldn’t move
My ankles were snapped, my legs bent at odd angles and my arms shattered.
The stranger stands nearby, his gaze piercing my back.
I look up to him
And next to his face, I see an apple.
The stranger reaches for it
But I want the apple
I want to be happy
I don’t want to suffer
“No…” I say
And the stranger grins
“Its all yours”
His fingers touch the apple
And it begins to unravel
The apple was simply a bundle of rope
A deception
A lie
“I did not lie” says the stranger
“Now you are free”
“Free from your running”
“Free from walking in circles”
A day later, a small girl is walking in the park and she comes across a peculiar site
A dead man lays at the bottom of a tree
A tree with a rope tied into its branches
Next to the tree lies a small iron plaque
The girl can’t quite read what the plaque says
Apart from a few words
“Savour every bite. The apple of joy will carry your-“
The girls walks away
