Outline the properties of a giant lattice structure
Giant Lattice:
- Has a crystalline solid structure at room temp.
- High MP/BP as a large amount of energy is needed to separate the ions (The strength of the bond is called lattice enthalpy)
- are low volatility
- Ions can conduct electricity in the molten state because they turn into electrolytes but not the solid state
-ions compounds are generally soluble in water but NOT in non-polar liquids
- ionic compounds are generally brittle
Discuss the different factors that can affect bond length
Factors:
- if there are more shells, then the bond length decreases
- if there is more charge then more force = shorter
- more bonds or more electrons in middle = stronger force = shorter + higher enthalpy
