S1C3: Water and its spatial distribution Flashcards
What are water stores?
Places where water is contained in
Places where water is contained in can be categorised as?
Freshwater shores and Saltwater shores
What are the 5 freshwater shores?
- Glaciers
- Lakes
- Rivers
- Soil
- Groundwater
What are Glaciers and where can they be found?
- Large masses of ice that rest on land or float in the sea
- found in places that snows throughout the year (allows for snow to accumulate and harden into ice
- they move slowly as they are heavy
What are lakes?
- Bodies of water surrounded by land
- They receive water from rain, snow or rivers
What are rivers?
- Natural wide flows of freshwater across the land that store water temporarily before water flows into another water body
- Flows from High to low
What’s the difference between River Source and River Mouth
- River Source marks the point where a river begins
- River mouth marks the place where a river flows into another water body
What is soil?
- loose topmost layer of Earth’s surface where plants grow
- When it rains, water passes through the soil through very small openings known as pores. Water stored in the soil is known as soil moisture
What is Groundwater
- found below surface of earth
- forms when water makes its way to the rocks beneath, filling up the pores and cracks of these rocks
What is an example of a saltwater shore?
Ocean
What are oceans?
Large masses of water connected to one another
Name the 5 oceans
- Pacific Ocean
- Atlantic Ocean
- Indian Ocean
- Artic Ocean
- Southern Ocean
Name the 8 processes in the Hydrological cycle
- Precipitation
- Infiltration
- Percolation
- Groundwater
- Surface runoff
- Evaporation
- Transpiration
- Condensation
What is a water budget?
A water budget equation describes the flow of water in and out of an catchment area
(In short: it tells us how much water is available in an area)
What is the term for: Having more than enough water?
Water surplus
