S1.3 Flashcards
how is emission spectra produced
emission spectra is produced by atoms emitting photons when electrons in excited state transitions to lower energy levels
continuous spectrum vs line spectrum
continuous spectrum: shows all wavelengths/frequencies/energies of light
like spectrum: shows specific wavelengths/frequencies/energies of light
when is UV photon emitted
when electrons go from n>1 to n=1
when is visible light emitted
when electron transitions from n>2 to n=2
when is infrared photons emitted
when electron transitions from n>3 to n=3
what is afbaus principle
electrons first fill sub shells of the lowest available energy (eg. 4s filled before 3d)
hunde rule
every orbital in a sublevel is partially occupied first before fully occupied, partially occupied orbitals should have parallel spin
pauli exclusion principle
electrons in orbital should have opposite spin
