Give us the 6 Golden Rules
- /ə/ never appears in stressed syllables
- A lexical item has only one primary stress
- A lexical item cannot start with two unstressed syllables
- All syllables following a primary stress are unstressed
- Grammatical words usually have a weak form
- Grammatical morphemes (-s; -ed; -ing; …) play no part in stress-asignment
What is the ION rule ?
If i, e or u + Vn (+ Cn), the syllable before will be stressed
What is the difference between a grammatical and a lexical morpheme ?
The lexical morpheme is the main word / The grammatical morpheme is the grammatical elements added to the lexical morpheme.
List of endings of words stressed on the ultimate (-01)
- ee -oo -eer -oon -affe -ette -ade -e/isque -ique
- es(c)e -ain (verbs) -aire -eur -self -teen
List of endings of words stressed on the last but one syllable / penultimate (-10)
- ic(s) -id -it -ish (verb) -sive -i-tis -o-sis -o-ma -oi-dal
- I-val -e/is-cence
Note : with a grammatical phoneme added, the exceptions become regular again
