Rx-Rx Interaction Flashcards
What are pharmacokinetic interactions?
When the delivery of the object drug to its site of action is altered by the precipitant drug.
*Amount of drug in blood is altered by affecting absorption (speeds, slows, increases, decreases)
What are pharmacodynamic interactions?
When the response of the object drug is modified by the precipitant drug without changes in drug concentrations.
*Amount of drug in blood remains the same but its effect is altered
What are pharmaceutic interactions?
They are physical or chemical incompatabilities
What is an additive interaction?
The combined effect of two drugs is equal to the sum of the effect of each drug given alone
What is a synergistic interaction?
When the combined effect exceeds the sum of the effects of each drug given alone
What is a potentiation reaction?
It is the creation of a toxic effect from one drug due to the presence of another drug
What is an antagonism interaction?
Interference of one drug with another (e.g. Rifampin and everything)
What is an object drug and a precipitant drug?
Object drug aka effect of a drug as a result of co-administration of another drug known as the precipitant drug
