Because the main economy was steel, coal and car industries. It was a massive industrial powerhouse
What has happened to the rustbelt and why?
Has declined rapidly. Population has shrunk greatly. All because of globalisation leading to deindustrilisation.
Where is the Rust Belt located?
North east USA. Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania etc. On Canada border

Foreign competitors caused the rust belt to become bust. This meant jobs disappeared. Because these disappeared then shops and businesses disappeared because there wasn’t the money for spending. Functional change led to demographic change. People left to find work elsewhere. Cycle of deprivation.
